Huge disappointment

Complete disaster. They arrived an hour and a half early and bullied me into rushing. Then Starving students again believe me into paying $80 for materials when I had already taped and wrapped everything. They ruined two of my fabric shoeboxes and they won’t return my phone call asking for a Credit. And by the way none of them were students!

Happy Customer !

We had an unbelievably great experience with Starving Students Movers. They were very professional and work amazingly hard. They were careful with our belongings, moved them efficiently and were extremely careful with our old house and our new home. Thank you Angel, Ron, Tyrone and Jimmy for your hard work and effort to get us moved! I would recommend this company to everyone. Hands down the best and easiest moving experience we’ve ever had.

LAIRS - CHEATERS - Going to hell!

This pathetic operation is so dishonest till it is pathetic. They showed up 2 hours late with two kids (Not professional movers)and a person who was so scared of his boss till he was simply a punk. They tried to cushion the start time. They lied about giving information about the $250.00 deposit. I was ONLY informed of that when they got there. Then the punk took his precious time to move my things. Started arguing with the boys stopping progress. Loud in the hall of my building. They put my mattress on the ground in the stairwell up against the wall. The head person (punk) yelled at me, and used porfanity. They didn't wrap a sinlge piece of furniture but put on the invoice Shrink wrap.. They tried to charge me for 5 men and that wasn't about to happen. I had to move ALL of my clothes and many other items BY MYSELF up 5 flights of steps since my building does not have an elevator. That menas I had to load my car several times, travel to my new place unload and go back for more. It took me two more days to get everything done and I got sick. They lied about "No Surprises" and then cushioned the time after they finished..(they workd 3 1/2 hours they put on the invoice 4.5hours) I wouldn't pay him no more than the deposit. I am going to sue for all of my money back. I have more evidence of wrong doing and if you want to see it and hear it, you can e-mail me at tonjalpalmer@gmail.com. Everything is legal and everything is true. check out the picture I posted. SAVE YOUR MONEY! CALL A REAL MOVING COMPANY! LYING SCHEMING PEOPLE>.. God is going to get you! BTW unpacking was NOT INCLUDED and was NOT done.

Negligent.

Unless your hiring the Starving Students Moving Company to hall your furniture to the dump, don't call them.  I hired this company on April 1, 2013, to move my furniture 11 miles.  They were grossly negligent and 6 pieces arrived severely damaged and that was with unlimited wrapping.  When I filled a complaint, I was told "if you really cared about your furniture, you would have bought full replacement valuation".  I suggest you just drag your furniture down the street.  It will arrive in better condition then if you trust the Starving Students Moving  with it.

Biggest Mistake.

Biggest mistake of our lives. We hired them to move some large things we couldn't move ourselves, a newer stainless steel washer and dryer and very large rolling toolbox. When the movers walked in they had already checked the spots for us to initial and told us nothing of any protection plans. Hindsight being 20/20 we should've looked closer but what they had us initial said that if they damaged anything, we'd be reimbursed .60 for each lb the item weighed. I contacted other moving companies, no one has anything likes this. They guarantee the quality of the move, obviously not starving students. Our washer and dryer were dropped when being carried up the exterior basement stairwell and scraped all over the railing. When they were in the truck I asked what we should do since they obviously damaged our appliances. I was told there was a "teeny tiny" scratch on the dryer door. When we arrived at the new house, they opened the door to the truck and we immediately saw all the blankets that they were supposed to use to protect the appliances, folded neatly in the truck, not used at all. As they brought the appliances in, it was much more than a teeny tiny scratch. Both appliances have deep scratches and even gouges and dents all over. The clear doors are all scratched and the toolbox has a big scratch that looks like someone keyed it in some type of abstract design. I was furious. I contacted the manager AND the claims department, told them I'd be contacting the BBB and they said they deal with that all time and a contract is a contract. Obviously, .60/lb will do nothing for these appliances. To make matters worse, when we returned to the old house the next day, the railing in the stairwell was left broken and in pieces, they never bothered to tell us. Also, having paid hourly, pretty irritated that one of the workers had to go #2 while on the clock. When we came to the house the following weekend and used the bathroom, he seriously didn't even flush. It had sat there for a week. I have been contacting the company now for over a week and no returned calls.  Do NOT use them. They are careless idiots.

Worst movers I've ever used.

This was by far the worst experience I have ever had using paid movers.

When the movers arrived, the foreman immediately started complaining that I had too much stuff and that it was a 3 man job. Eventually he told me to call “his boss” and ask for a third person. I spoke to her and authorized it, and she spoke to the foreman, but then nothing actually happened with it. He did continually complain throughout the day that it should have been a 3 man job, and seemed to blame me for there only being 2 people, as if I was supposed to estimate how many people were needed.

Once they started working, we noticed that the foreman was limping, and wearing one sandal. He mentioned to us that 2 weeks ago, his lift gate dropped on his toe. I think it’s incredibly unprofessional to be doing such a demanding physical job when you’re not in good medical condition, and it’s very unsafe to not be wearing closed-toe shoes.

Early in the loading process, the foreman asked me if I had boxes for the two televisions (which I indicated as part of the move both in the initial contact and showed to him when he arrived). I said I did not, and he said we should’ve had boxes for them, but nothing more. I was unaware I needed boxes for the TVs, as I have hired movers multiple times in the past and they never had any problem wrapping TVs in blankets and loading them into the truck.

About midway through the loading process, the foreman again asked me if I had boxes for the TVs. I again said I didn’t, and he said he would not move them without boxes. I ended up speaking this boss about this, and she said if I signed a waiver stating that I accepted all risk of damage to the TVs, the movers could wrap them in blankets and load them. The foreman refused to do that, then changed course, and said he would, if I threw in an additional $25 for him. I told him no, and spoke to hisboss about this, because I do not appreciate being shaken down like that. She agreed that he shouldn’t have done that, and told me her boss would be giving me a call in a few minutes.

While waiting for that call, the foreman began yelling at me that I should not have talked to her about it, because she can’t tell him what to do. He said he wouldn’t wrap and load the TVs because he would not “do something for free.” That doesn’t make sense to me because I’m paying by the hour, so he’s already being compensated. Eventually, I was sick of being yelled at and told him to drop it – the TVs would not be moved, and please get on with the loading. This conflict clearly upset him a great deal, as he would barely make eye contact with me or say another word the rest of the move.

I did receive a call from his boss’s boss, wherein I discussed some of these issues. He agreed that the foreman shouldn’t have asked me for more money to move the TVs, and said he’d talk to him and then get back to me. I never heard back.

Close to the end of the move, the foreman said something along the lines of, “just the couch and we’re done.” At that point, there were still about 10-15 boxes in the garage, my workbench, and a few other items, such as a ladder and some lamps. I pointed those out and he took the workbench and boxes, but refused to take the ladder. He said something along the lines of, “can’t you put it in your car?” I have a Honda Accord, and this is a large ladder. No, I can’t put it in the car – that’s why I hired movers in the first place.

The lamps never made it in the truck, nor did a variety of other small things such as a shovel, brooms, a stand mixer, and very small air compressor.

Finally, they finished loading everything, and left without even telling us they were leaving.

The unloading went mostly smoothly, although I am not happy that my workbench was left on it’s side instead of upright as it should be. Also, my (small) filing cabinet was broken – I saw it drop off the lift gate of the truck, smashing into the road (see attached). I don’t know if this was an accident or some petty revenge for the conflict we’d had. I understand I signed a waiver about damage to my stuff, so this is the risk I take.

My mattress now has filthy handprints in multiple spots, and there is what looks like wood shavings and dirt on the side of it, as well as my couch. I assume this is from the floor of the truck. I don’t think it’s acceptable – there should be pads underneath the furniture or it should be completely wrapped or something.

There was enough stuff that the foreman either refused to move, or simply ignored and left behind that I had to rent a U-Haul today, go back to the old house, and move it all myself.

All in all, this experience was an absolute nightmare, and far and away the worst “professional” movers I’ve ever hired. I intend to warn off all friends and family from Starving Students.

Moving experience.

I am writing this 2.5 months after my experience with Starving Students, hoping that anyone that is considering them- reads this before hiring. When I first let them know of my experience- it wasn't the traditional response of "we are so sorry this happened, and let's talk about how to make this right." It was "please allow us 45 days to process your claim." That is never a good sign- when a company has so many complaints, that they need a month and a half to even read yours. When that magical time period passed- I wrote again. It looked like they finally read it and said oh well since yours is not specifically a damage claim- there is nothing we can do. I believe starving students uses the "please allow 45 days" tactic to stall angry customers in hopes that there fervor would die out- not this chick. Here are the details of our horrid moving experience with starving students:1) We hired an off brand company to do our moving on saturday 8/25, said company did not show up and so we scrambled to find someone to help us that day2) we called many other places who could do our move, but starving students had the most truck space and we knew they were a nationally recognized brand that was insured and bonded3) we called your corporate office to schedule the move..the gentleman we spoke with told us that they would send 2 guys (we originally wanted 3) and laughed at us when we said it would take around 6 hours, stating that he didn't believe it would be anywhere near that for such a small move (we relayed that our place was 850 sq ft and a 2 bedroom apt) but couldn't quote us directly4) we then spoke with bill j who was the head contact person for the south bay area, he stated they would be there "somewhere between 1 and 5," but couldn't guarantee when5) we found another company who could give us a definitive yes and called bill to cancel..he stated that he could also give us a definitive yes but couldn't say what exact time between 1 and 5 but that they would for sure be there between that time6) anxious to get our move underway, we called him back several hours later because we never heard an update as he told us he would provide, he mostly sounded annoyed, and said "i have no way of predicting when they are going to be done maam"7) the movers showed at 5:39, and took one look at the place and stated that they were not told this would be this big of a move (our apt was 850 sq ft) and that they did not have the proper materials (shrink wrap, packaging, padding, etc) so that if they moved us it would be "at your own risk," 8) I called bill j who proceeded to state "well maam what do you expect, you asked for a same day move and these guys have had much bigger jobs today, they ain't gonna have all the supplies. I responded that we paid the same price as everyone else, and if we had been told that we would be receiving lesser quality service, I could assure him we would have gone with another company. I also added that the reason we picked starving students was because they were bonded and insured. Otherwise we could have gone with any guy off the street. He responded with "who said that?" I told him I don't know what guy it is, but that these are your company's representatives. He stated "well maam you signed a contract stating that we're responsible for it, if you read the contract its in there." 9) Bill's overall demeanor and tone was incredibly rude, lax, and condescending10) We asked the men to proceed with our move and after they hemmed and hawed it was close to 7pm. As it progressed, they asked my husband to borrow his tools because they forgot theirs, tried to disassemble our bed with a screwdriver, although we were told all would be equipped with power tools11) the truck had no light in the back of it- so my husband had to use his iphone's flashlight app to help the movers load and unload12) the men then stopped mid way through the move (which was now midnight) and stated that they would be back first thing in the morning at 8am. We were hesitant to sign off but they put a tremendous amount of pressure on us to sign off, and bill j was unreachable. 13) 8:30 am the next day arrived and no one showed. We called corporate and had to go through the process of re-setting the move. They assured us someone would be at our place shortly. We called them and Bill J (who's phone was turned off) 3 times. Bill was, again, indifferent and unconcerned. They (2 different men) showed at 10:45am. 14) In addition to all this, our white carpet on our stairs was left unprotected, and thus black soot from their shoes is now all over it. Several of our items were also broke after we unpacked including a large dresser. At the end of the day- I can accept that everyone may have some bumps and scratches after a move, but the experience that I had with starving students being charged over $1000 was a nightmare.

Use ANYONE else.

I have used other movers in the past and had a reasonable experiences. To begin the movers showed up 4 hours late to a high rise apartment where there was only a 3 hour elevator reservation time. When they delivered the items, upon unpacking we noticed multiple items were damaged beyond repair during the move. Furthermore, they did not transport several of the items we asked they to move. Overall a low end experience. My advice is to avoid completely. If this isn't possible secondary to availability of another carrier, watch these guys like a hawk from beginning to end.

My Move.

I needed them to come early, and they were able to accommodate that for me. The guys were helpful with suggestions that I needed about moving. I was able to leave for an hour to get some errands done, and the guys let me know they would be fine and I could leave without worrying about them. The guys were very friendly, and I had a really good, less stessful, smooth move.

Items Stolen by movers.

These movers are slow and dishonest. The salesman misrepresented the value of having a 3rd mover because the movers are so slow that having a 3rd mover simply increased the overall cost of the mover rather than saving money. I moved a small 3 bedroom apartment with a sofa, one chair, a bed, a small number of kitchen items and some personal items about 8 miles or less. I stayed with the movers for about 2 hours while they moved most of the boxes I had packed and all the furniture. All they had to pack was a few dishes and some clothing. They were almost done according to their lead mover and would follow me to the home very shortly. 3 hours later I called the mover and asked where they were. He did not have a reasonable answer and stated they were on the way. When I went back to check the apartment I found they had gone into the refrigerator and drunk all the soda. They also had left all the coats in the hall closet. That turned out to be blessing because they stole a $2700 Dolce and Gabbana leather jacket and a $700 Valentino Red jacket. The move that should have cost about $700 cost almost $1000. It took me a while to recognize the theft. I am filing a police report and file an insurance claim so my insurance company will subrogate against Starving Students to hold the company responsible. If you have a reservation with Starving Students, please cancel. If you are looking for a mover, ask friends for a referral to a reputable company. Based on my experience and the other reviews posted on line, this company misrepresents the costs and some of their movers are apparently dishonest.
